Since the canvas for makeup application is the skin, it is imperative to have some knowledge about the skin, so we can get the best out of it when applying makeup on it. The skin is the largest organ in the human body which is complex and dynamic at the same time simple and easy to take care of. It renews itself constantly by shedding dead cells as blood those cells move up to its top layer called the epidermis. The proper and easier care for the skin is basic – cleanse, tone and moisturize. This is called the TCM rule. This rule should be the basis for your work as a Makeup artist, because a good skin will always help your makeup application look better. The skin consists of two clearly defines layers: The epidermis: this is the superficial or outermost layer i.e., it is the skin we can feel and see. It consists of the pigment called the melanin, which protect the sensitive cells beneath from the harmful effects of the sun. The greater the exposure to sunlight, the greater the production of melanin. The dermis: this is the inner layer which is located just under the epidermis. It is highly sensitive because it contains nerve endings. It also contains hair follicles and sebaceous glands which are attached to the hair follicles. There are different types of skin. Type 1: Oily: Oily skin tends to shiny with enlarged pores and is prone to blackheads and blemishes. The care for oily skin requires more care. Gentle cleansers with salicylic acid will help to balance the sebum and combat acne. While choosing moisturizers and foundation for oily skin remember that they should be water based, avoid consumption of fried and saturated food, a mild exfoliation too should be used often to remove black heads and dead skin cells. Foundation formula can also be oil-free formula too. Type 2: Combination: You have some parts of the face (especially the t-zone) are oily while the other parts are normal. It’s a very tricky one though because extra caution has to be taken in caring for a combination skin. Mostly you can use a gentle cleanser, facial wash or rosewater to cleanse all over since the combination is oily and normal skin, but only in very rare situations will you find a combination skin with oily and dry skin, but if in that situation, you take care of both parts differently. Type 3: Normal: This skin type has medium pores, a smooth and even texture, good circulation, healthy color. This skin is healthy and balanced, with enough oil to prevent water loss but not excessive to clog pores. It is quite easy to care for a normal skin. Cleanse normally with a cleanser not too harsh or containing alcohol, but that which is meant for a normal skin, tone and moisturize the skin as usual. Most foundation formula can be used depending on the look you are trying to achieve. Type 4: Sensitive: Sensitive skin tends to be thin, itchy, patchy, and delicate with fine pores. It flushes and breaks out easily, is prone to broken capillaries, is frequently allergic and can be rashly. It is prone to dirt, dust, some skin products, environmental change, water weather etc. One has to be very careful while using anything on sensitive skin. Care has to be taken with foundation formular for sensitive skin. Type 5: Dry: Dry skin feels tight, especially after cleansing. It has a tendency towards fine wrinkles and flaking. In women of color, skin may appear ashy or dull from dead skin buildup. This skin too requires more care like oily skin. It requires moisture than other skin types. It requires creamy or gentle face wash and creams that are specially made for dry skin type. Never forget to apply a good night cream while going to bed. The only advantage with this skin is that it hardly breaks into acne and pimples. Drink lots of water to hydrate the skin, it requires lots of moisture as the body produces less sebum than required by the body. Foundation formular can be cream, or stick foundation, Type 6: Aging or sun-damaged: As one gets older, the skin losses its elasticity because the cell growth rate is slowed down, resulting in decreasing production of collagen. Because of the slowdown the self-healing process is reduced which further causes the dead skin cells to accumulate on the surface, becoming dense, making natural exfoliation difficult, thus creating lines & wrinkles slack skin tone especially around the cheeks and jaw line, with leathery texture and broken capillaries. The care for this type of skin should be started a long time ago before the skin loses its elasticity, but the remedy can be the use of moisturizers with alpha hydroxy acids, retinol, collagen and other natural ingredients which help the skin retain its moisture and suppleness. A cream based formular also works when thinking of foundation for oily aging skin. The generally recommended procedures to control changes in your skin as you age naturally, is proper care for your skin. Intake of at least 8 glasses of water daily Eating of a balanced diet and more of vegetables and fruits Using products that are less destructive to the epidermis. Exercise for at least 20 minutes a day. Cleansing, toning and moisturizing your skin daily can help you rejuvenate and revive your skin. Lastly and the most important for all skin types is to use sunscreen daily.
